Career

Michael Jackson, also known as the King of Pop debuted his career as a singer at the age of 6, when he was chosen by his father to be the lead singer of the Jacksons. His mother discovered his incredible talent a few years earlier and tried to convince the father to support him. The band became later the Jacksons 5. Their father Joe, took them to take an interview at the Motown label, which was famous for promoting famous black artists like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and many others. As Berry Gordy watched Michael perform, he understood he is going to be a hit. The rest of the members of the Jackson 5 were eclipsed by Michael's talent and were a less important part of the singer's career. They were simple backup singers, whereas Michael was the lead singer due to his huge talent. Moreover, he was inspired by the personality, style and moves of great singers like James Brown, Frank Sinatra and had a passion for dancing since an early age. However, before meeting Berry Gordy from Motown, they used to sing in strip clubs and bars to earn a living. The contract made with Motown completely changed Michael's life and put him on the way to greatness. As one of the most successful bands at the time, the Jackson 5 released several hits as I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save, I'll Be There, Got to Be There, Ben, Blame it on the Boogie, Dancing machine, Shake your body, Rockin' Robin, Can you feel it, and many others. But Michael became so famous and Motown couldn't offer him a wide variety of choices. They signed a contract with Epic, another music label, and released 6 final albums between 1976 and 1984. However, Michael felt manipulated and constricted and wanted to go solo and create his own career that he could manage freely. In 1978, he took part in a musical, The Wiz, a different version of the Wizard of Oz, and starred as the scarecrow.

During the shooting of this movie, he met Quincy Jones, the man who changed his life and helped him fulfill his dream. Quincy Jones is the famous producer who teamed with Michael to rewrite the history of music. Their first album, Off the Wall (1979), didn't reach the success they were hopping to. With Michael's strong personality and the will of achieving perfection, the 3rd place and 20 million copies sold wasn't enough for him, despite successful song like Off the Wall, Rock with you, Don't stop till you get enough, She's out of my life. He was deceived and made a deal with Quincy: create the best selling album in history! And so he succeeded.

Thriller was to be the album that gave him the title of King of Pop and the achievement of his dream. It reached the first place in most important tops across the world with songs like Billie Jean, Wanna Be Startin' Something, Beat It and Thriller. He won with his 1982 best selling album 8 Grammys and countless other awards. But Michael also redefined video clips by transforming Thriller's promotion clip into a zombie short length movie with incredible effects never seen before. He also revolutionized dancing by creating the Moonwalk and the famous zombie dance as well as other incredible moves.  As of today, he sold around 110 million copies of Thriller and still counting. In 1984, he shot a commercial for Pepsi that turned really bad with Michael getting injured. Shortly after, he co-wrote We are the world, a charity song, with Lionel Richie and performed it accompanied by a great number of artists in order to raise funds for Africa. The song was remastered and performed in 2010 also by a multitude of artists to support Haiti after the devastating earthquake.

Bad was his second album with Quincy Jones, which was released in 1987, being a hit, but never reaching Thriller's level. Various songs made Michael even more popular and reinforced his title of King of Pop such as I Just Can't Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror and Dirty Diana and Smooth Criminal. In order to promote his album, he started his first solo world tour named Bad, which was one of his best performances to date. He also wrote an autobiography, to describe his entire life and cast away the suspicions about him. He also created his first movie, called Moonwalker which included his latest video clips and also having a similar success to his earlier 3D movie, Captain EO. In this same period, he bought with the money from the tour, a vast terrain and built the Neverland Ranch, a place were Michael felt the best.

Dangerous, his fourth solo album was released it 1991 and included famous songs such as Black or White, Jam, Remember the time, Heal the World and many others. However, it didn't reach previous success but managed to stay on top of the charts for several weeks and sold to date around 33 million copies worldwide. The next year was a primordial year in Michael's career as he started on June 27, 1992 the Dangerous World Tour, being known as his most successful one! He also created the Heal the World foundation in order to collect money and help sick children. He revolutionized for a third time the video industry with incredible effects in the Remember the Time video and introduced for the first time the Face Morph at the end of the Black or White video clip.

HIStory ought to be the next album in line, which he presented as a single but also a double album including previous songs, and released in 1995. Once more he amazed his fans and the whole world with songs such as Earth Song, Scream, They Don't Really Care About Us, You are not alone and more. Once again he revolutionized dancing by perfecting the robot dance and video industry by making the most expensive video clip, Scream. He started his last tour scheduled for 1996 and 1997, even if he had voice problems. Due to his strong character and determination, Michael was forced to lip-sync several songs due to Laryngitis. He released later that year, the Blood on the Dance Floor mix tape.

Invincible was his last album to contain new songs and was released in 2001. The dispute with Sony canceled their contract and the album never got the promotion expected and didn't surpass 15 million. Several collection albums were released later with previous songs. Invincible was one of his best albums featuring songs like Break of Dawn, Invincible, Unbreakable, You Rock my World and other. The last one quoted was the only one to be released as a music video. The two days prior to the 9/11 incident were dedicated to a special 30th anniversary of Michael Jackson as an artist and featured various artists and friends. It was Michael's last appearance on stage in front of a large audience.

In his last years of life, he was confronted to multiple economic problems and debts and had to sell the Neverland Ranch. He decided to release in 2008 a special 25th anniversary of Thriller with exclusive remakes of famous songs with Akon, Will.I.Am, Fergie and Kanye West.

As a final try to cover all of his debts, Michael announced that he was going to tour for the last time in London called the This is it Tour, but never took place as the King of Pop past away on June 25th 2009. The movie This is it, containing a compilation of his rehearsals for this tour was released in 2009 in cinemas and on DVD and Blu-ray later.

On March 16, 2010, it was announced that the Michael Jackson Estate signed a 250 million $ (the largest ever) contract with Sony to publish 10 new albums with unreleased songs.

Personal life

Michael Joe Jackson was born in August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, as one of the ten children of Katherine and Joseph Jackson. He was the brother of Rebbie, La Toya, Janet, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Brandon (died after birth) and Randy. The Jacksons were members of the Jehovah Witness but some of the abandoned this belief, including Michael. He had a troubled relationship with his father, and was often beaten or insulted about his appearances. The will of being perfect and becoming famous made him neglect the role of father and focused on a professional approach with his children. Michael had suffered a lot for not having a childhood, and often had to watch other kids play while he had to rehearse. While still being a kid, he was exposed to an adult life and sometimes had to perform in strip clubs and bars.

Michael slowly became independent and started to manage his carrier and life by his own. But the major problem was his privacy. He always wanted a normal life, to be able to go to a local store without being harassed by the media or fans. Everywhere he went, paparazzi and fans would follow him. Despite his love for his admirers, he felt insecure around them and slowly started to isolate himself from the society.
While Michael was touring he was always under constant pressure as he tried to achieve perfection and satisfy the public. This effort made him lose weight during tours and exhaust him. But the worst part was that he felt really lonely even if hundreds of fans were waiting and acclaiming him outside his hotel room. He knew, he couldn't go meet them without having to face the most hysterical of those fans. In his isolation, Michael was able to buy a vast property that he called Neverland, based on the fictional land from Peter Pan, his favorite character. To compensate the lost childhood, he built his own amusement park, with carousels, roller-coasters, aqua-park, swimming pool, cinema, theater and many other resorts. He would invite his family, but mostly children who he enjoyed spending most of his time with, because he considered them as being kind, and without looking for profit or trying to exploit like adults do. Michael invited many disadvantaged kids to spend some time at Neverland and helped them overcome their problems. He loved water balloon fights as well as super-soaker. He always was a child inside which is a very good thing, because he was able to be a professional singer, manager and also a very kind person who helped others. Throughout his carrier, he donated more than 300 million dollars to charity and created the Heal the World association which helps disadvantaged children across the world.
He was never satisfied with his appearance due to his father's insults and had two plastic surgeries on his nose. In 1986, Michael Jackson was diagnosed with Vitiligo, a skin disease that slowly destroys the pigment and lupus which made him sensitive to sunlight. There were rumors that he tried to bleach his skin in order to destroy any resemblance to his father, but Michael was proud to be black and had forgiven his father for his severity. At first he tried to hide the white spots of Vitiligo, but as the disease spread, he had to adjust his color to the new pigment. He accelerated the irreversible process in order to avoid having spots which could've been dangerous for his career. His appearance had deteriorated with time due to the stress, and suffering, moreover he was skinnier and skinnier. He was in good shape before his death and he gained some wight, and looked as in his early 30s. He suffered from 3rd degree scalp burn due to an incident during the shooting of a Pepsi commercial.

He was falsely accused of child molestation in 1993 by the father of a kid he invited to Neverland amongst many others. Finally he made was proven innocent and had to pay a large sum of money to the father. But this incident started to destroy Michael, as he would take painkillers and sedatives. He never was the same. In 2003 after deciding to let a British journalist make a report on his life, he was accused of child molestation again. He was arrested and had a 5 month long trial which completely destroyed him. He isolated himself from everyone and started to take sedatives again, because he couldn't sleep anymore, which caused his death in 2009.

In 1993, he married Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley but shortly after. In 1996 he married Debbie Rowe which gave birth to two of his children: Prince Michael Joseph Jackson and Paris Michael-Katherine Jackson. In 2002 he had his third and final son, with a surrogate mother, called Prince Michael Jackson II (nicknamed "Blanket").

During his final years, he traveled a lot with his children and spent a large part of time in Arabia.

I personally like Michael Jackson as an artist for his talent at singing and dancing, but most of all as a human, who was passioned and concerned about everybody's safety. Throughout his songs he tried to spread positives messages about love, friendship and to protect the nature. He is an inspiration for me as a man and also as an artist. Rest in Peace Michael!
